A Tomb with a View
The Ladies of the Night

Darla and Dru's relationship is an interesting one. They have both had a profound effect on one another's lives. It was Darla who first pointed Dru out to Angelus, and of course Drusilla turned Darla when she was human and dying for the second time.

Darla was at first taken aback at Angelus plan to turn Drusilla, pointing out that she was a lunatic. Darla is often dismissive of Drusilla's more off-base statements, and her visions.
Dru: "When I bit into him, I could hear the ocean."
Darla: "Of course you could."

*****
Darla: "I think our boys are going to fight."
Drusilla: "The King of Cups expects a picnic! But this is not his birthday."
Darla: (looks at Drusilla like she's crazy) "Good point..."

Darla perhaps doesn't know quite how to deal with Drusilla's swings between lucidity and madness. Despite her supernatural nature, she is practically minded, and also seems uncomfortoble with Drusilla's ability to see inside her head.
Dru: "Eyes like needles."
Darla: "Dru, I'm working here."
Dru: "He sees you. Sees what you were. You'll never be alone again."
Darla: "Stop! J-just don't."
Dru: "He's watching you, my sweet, right now."
Darla: "Angel."
Dru: "He wants to punish us. He thinks we've been naughty. He remembers when you were warm."
Darla: "Shut UP, Drusilla!"

However, Darla should perhaps learn to pay more attention to Dru - neither of them realised that the fire and pain that Dru saw in Redefinition was going to happen to them. Darla often appears distracted and to not really listen to what Dru is saying, unlike Angel or Spike who usually encouraged her and coaxed her to explain herself.

There is, though, obviously a bond between Darla and Dru - Drusilla refers to Darla as "Grandmother" often, and clearly sees her as part of her family. Although Darla is impatient of Dru's foibles, she is clearly fond of her and sees her as a useful ally and companion. When Angel set them on fire, she didn't just run to the fire hydrant to save herself, she pulled Dru along with her. Darla has also comforted Dru when she was upset or hurt.

Are they lovers? This isn't something which has been directly shown in Angel or Buffy, but they are tactile with one another - embracing, and holding hands. Darla also reached down Dru's top to pull out her mobile phone. This could be because as vampires they aren't concerned with 'personal boundaries' - they certainly both seem to be physical and sensually oriented creatures. And it could indicate something more.

Although Darla and Drusilla obviously spent some considerable time together after Drusilla was turned, it is likely that now in LA is the first time they have been together without Angelus or Spike accompanying them. However, they seem to work very well together so far.

They share a bloodline (twice over), and both are strong and deadly vampires. However, it is perhaps their differences which make them such a formidable force. Darla and Dru are in some ways exact opposites. Apart from the physical (dark/fair, tall/petite), as humans they were very different. Darla was a prostitute who repudiated God, whereas Drusilla was religious and about to become a nun when she was turned. Darla is grounded in reality, and always seems to live in the present, whereas Drusilla has her head very much in the clouds, and in terms of clothes and technology, lives in the past most of the time.

There is no doubt that separately they are dangerous; together their strengths and skills complement one another, making them almost unstoppable. As Darla says, "Me and my girl, we're not just the new thing in town - we're the only thing in town." Unfortunately, it didn't stay that way for long, but just think of the fun if it had. :-)
